A 22-year-old man from Birmingham has been sentenced to five years in prison after police discovered a loaded firearm in his possession during a raid on his home. Syed Kashaff was arrested as part of a wider investigation into gang violence in the city.

Officers conducted the raid and found the loaded weapon inside a manbag on Kashaff’s bed. The firearm, which had a magazine containing six rounds of ammunition, was confiscated. During a further search, six more rounds of ammunition were located inside a hat in Kashaff’s wardrobe.

Kashaff admitted to possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, 20th September, to five years for possessing the firearm and an additional 16-month sentence, to be served concurrently, for the possession of ammunition.

Detective Inspector Jon Green, of the Major Crime Unit, highlighted the significance of the arrest: “Kashaff’s arrest came as part of a wider investigation into gang violence, which causes devastation and misery in communities. As a result of this discovery, we’ve taken a deadly weapon off the streets, and an individual with direct access to it is behind bars.”

The conviction is part of Operation Target, a West Midlands Police initiative aimed at tackling serious and organised crime, including firearms, drugs, money laundering, and exploitation. Police continue to work around the clock to bring those involved in these criminal activities to justice.
