A disqualified driver who arrived at Stechford Police Station behind the wheel has been jailed for almost six months after being found intoxicated and flouting his driving ban.

Muhammad Habib, 36, was scheduled to attend the police station to meet bail conditions related to prior driving offences. However, a vigilant front desk officer noticed Habib appeared intoxicated and flagged the matter to police.

Further investigation revealed Habib had driven himself to the station, despite being banned from driving for previous drink-related offences. He was detained after refusing to provide a breath sample and was subsequently charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance.

At a hearing on 2 December at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, Habib was sentenced to 25 weeks in prison. He was also handed an additional 18-week suspended sentence, which will see him return to jail if he re-offends within two years.

Habib has been banned from driving for four years and will need to complete an extended driving test once the ban is lifted. The court highlighted his “flagrant disregard” for prior rulings as a key reason for his custodial sentence.

West Midlands Police have urged drivers to be mindful of the dangers posed by drink-driving, particularly during the festive season, as officers continue to tackle the “Fatal Four” driving offences.
