Suspected Arson Causes Fire at Birmingham Retail Shop and Flats on Stratford Road

Early Monday morning, a suspected arson incident ignited a fire at a retail shop on Stratford Road in Sparkhill, Birmingham, evacuating nearby flats. The emergency response commenced shortly before 4:55 a.m. after reports of the blaze.

A substantial firefighting effort was mobilized, with ten fire engines, two 4×4 brigade response vehicles, and a hydraulic aerial platform arriving at the scene. Approximately 55 firefighters tackled the flames, which originated at the front of the shop and quickly spread to the shop’s signage and the bay windows of the residential flats above.

Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, conducted thorough searches within the shop and the affected flats to ensure no casualties were present. the fire may have been initiated after a vehicle collided with the building, subsequently setting it alight. Residents from the flats were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Stratford Road remains closed in both directions from Formans Road to Nansen Road to facilitate emergency operations and the ongoing investigation. Police and fire investigators are collaborating closely to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fire.
