A 42-year-old man from Birmingham is facing a lengthy prison sentence after admitting to a series of sexual offences against a child, including rape.

Saptarshi Mitra, of Ashfield Avenue, appeared at Birmingham Crown Court on 7 July, where he pleaded guilty to 13 charges of sexual abuse. The most serious of these included two counts of rape. Mitra was originally set to stand trial but changed his plea and admitted to all offences.

The abuse had taken place over several years until the victim bravely came forward and reported the offences. Mitra was arrested by police and a search of his mobile phone revealed indecent images of the child.

Detective Sergeant Claire Hankinson, from West Midlands Police’s Complex Child Abuse Investigation Team, said:
“Mitra took advantage of his young victim, but thanks to her courage in speaking out, he will now face justice. We commend her bravery and hope it inspires others who have suffered abuse to come forward.”

The Complex Child Abuse unit is specially trained to support survivors of sexual abuse and guide them through the legal process with sensitivity and care.

Mitra is due to be sentenced in September.

West Midlands Police reminds the public that all survivors of sexual assault are protected by law and have the right to life-long anonymity.
