Syed Ali, aged 22, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to just over seven years at Birmingham Crown Court today, (31 March).

Ali and his wife were working at a warehouse in Tamworth alongside the 23-year-old man who was stabbed.

Tensions were rising in the weeks leading up to the attack which happened in Trinity Road, Aston, during the early hours of 25 September last year.

He’d confronted the man on several occasions and a series of heated exchanges took place over the phone.

The pair arranged to meet to discuss things and Ali smashed the window of the car the other man had arrived in. Shortly after, they met again on Trinity Road and a fight broke out.

Witnesses described seeing Ali with a knife and moments later the man collapsed after being stabbed in the heart.

Following lifesaving interventions from medics and an operation to repair the damage caused to his heart, the man fortunately survived.

Ali fled the scene and went to change his clothing, however, was arrested in the area shortly after on suspicion of attempted murder.

Today (31 March), Ali of Bevington Road, Aston, was sentenced to seven years and two months at Birmingham Crown Court.

DC Ed Ketterer, from our force CID, said: “This was a sickening act of violence on our streets which was completely unacceptable.

“Sadly we see the effects of knife crime far too often; the devastation that it causes so many people is truly heart-breaking.

“Ali had a knife and the consequences were nearly fatal. The man is lucky to be alive after being stabbed in the heart.

“My thoughts are with him as he tries to rebuild his life after this terrifying ordeal.”

We’re doing all we can to tackle knife crime and warn people of the dangers of carrying weapons. We have a dedicated team, Project Guardian to tackle youth violence and knife crime as part of our #knifeorlife campaign.
