A 38-year-old man from Birmingham has been found guilty of raping a vulnerable woman after meeting her during a night out in West Bromwich. Donovan Brown was convicted at Birmingham Crown Court on charges of raping a female over the age of 16. He is set to be sentenced on 25 April at the same court.

The incident occurred on the evening of 3 August last year, when Brown encountered the woman, who had been heavily drinking, in West Bromwich. Despite her repeated requests to be taken home, Brown instead brought her to his residence in Perry Barr, Birmingham, where he raped her. The victim awoke the following morning to find Brown assaulting her. After the attack, he returned her to the location where he had initially picked her up, and she immediately reported the crime to the police.

Investigators swiftly secured CCTV footage showing Brown with the woman and traced the route he took to his home. Brown was arrested within days of the incident. The victim’s consistent and courageous testimony, coupled with Brown’s inconsistent account of events, played a pivotal role in securing the conviction.

Detective Constable Daniel Folley, from the public protection unit, praised the victim’s bravery: “This conviction was made possible by the courage of this woman in coming forward. Brown is a dangerous individual who exploited her vulnerabilities during a night out. We hope her strength encourages other survivors of sexual abuse to seek justice.”

The case underscores the importance of anonymity protections for survivors of sexual assault, who are granted life-long legal safeguards to ensure their privacy and dignity. Authorities continue to urge anyone affected by sexual violence to come forward, assuring them of support and confidentiality throughout the legal process.
