A Birmingham man who subjected a woman to violent assaults, including attempted strangulation, has been sentenced to five years and four months in prison.
Alex Byrne, of South Road, Stockland Green, repeatedly attacked the woman, biting her and throwing a clothes dryer at her during several assaults last year. The victim called the police in March seeking help.
After multiple attempts to arrest Byrne at addresses linked to him, West Midlands Police issued a wanted appeal. On 20 June, Byrne was apprehended outside a restaurant after assaulting door staff.
He was charged with intentional strangulation, two counts of assault, four counts of criminal damage, and sending malicious communications.
Detective Inspector Phil Griffiths from West Midlands Police said, “Byrne is a dangerous man who subjected this woman to awful physical and mental violence. We have supported the woman throughout this difficult process, kept her safe, and connected her with charities for further support.”
West Midlands Police continue to offer around-the-clock support to victims of abuse. If you need help, call 101 or dial 999 in an emergency.
