Birmingham City Council will be ensuring families eligible for free school meals will get the help they need over the upcoming February half-term break.

The council has used the government’s COVID Winter Grant Scheme funding to purchase one week of supermarket vouchers for all eligible children (those in Reception – Year 14 at schools as well as eligible children at early years settings).

Cllr Jayne Francis, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Culture, said: “It is great news that the vouchers have now been made available once more to schools and other settings so that they can be provided to families ahead of the half-term holiday.

“While it is disappointing the government is not providing this service direct across the country, I am pleased the council has stepped up and is supporting families in this way.

“It is even more vital right now as we are seeing an increase in the number of children in Birmingham who are eligible for free school meals.”
