A drink driver who caused the death of his friend in a high-speed collision on Christmas Day 2022 has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Nirvair Lall, 25, was driving a black Ford Fiesta along Forge Lane, West Bromwich, in the early hours of 25 December when he lost control and crashed into a tree. Tragically, his friend and passenger, 25-year-old Inderjot Singh, was declared dead at the scene.

Lall initially gave false details to officers and denied being involved, claiming he was a rear seat passenger and that the driver had fled. However, a roadside breath test, CCTV footage, and data from electronic tags worn by both men disproved his claims.

Footage showed Lall drinking at a pub on Park Lane, Hockley, before taking the driver’s seat with Singh as a passenger. Tag data revealed the car was travelling at nearly 70mph on a 30mph road just before the crash.

Lall, of Amberley Green, Birmingham, admitted causing death by careless driving while unfit through drink. On 11 November, Wolverhampton Crown Court sentenced him to four years in prison and disqualified him from driving for seven years.

Detective Constable Gail Arnold from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:
“Lall’s dangerous driving at motorway speeds while intoxicated caused the tragic death of his friend. This incident highlights the devastating consequences of drink-driving. Our thoughts remain with Inderjot’s loved ones.”

The West Midlands Police emphasised its commitment to road safety, noting the recent launch of the Roads Policing Unit under Operation Triton to target offences such as speeding, drink-driving, and other high-risk behaviours contributing to serious collisions.
