A drink driver who mowed down and killed a pedestrian while speeding in Wolverhampton has been jailed.
Anup Patel struck Naresh Kumar as he tried to cross Dudley Road, Blakenhall, in the early hours of 3 March this year.
Patel was breath-tested at the scene and recorded 44 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.
A subsequent investigation by our Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) also found his Toyota Yaris had been travelling at 49 mph, in a 30mph zone, around 42 metres before the collision.
Mr Kumar, aged 50, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and died that same day.
Patel pleaded guilty to causing death by driving without due care and attention whilst unfit through drink.
The 43-year-old of Dudley Walk, Goldthorn Hill, was jailed for three years at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Friday (2 October). He will be banned from driving for four-and-a-half years following his release.
Sergeant Dean Caswell, from our SCIU, said: “This was a tragic case of Mr Kumar being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“Patel was not only speeding, but over the drink drive limit. Sadly, nothing can bring Mr Kumar back and we can only hope this conviction will provide some crumb of comfort to his family.”
