DVSA response to problems with driving test booking service

The driving test booking service reopened on Friday 21 August 2020 for new bookings for the general public.

The service had been closed since 20 March 2020 because of coronavirus (COVID-19), and DVSA had only been dealing with applications for emergency driving tests for critical workers during that time.

There has been unprecedented demand to use the service. By 8pm on Friday 21 August, the service had been visited almost 7 million times.

  • This has resulted in people:
  • having problems accessing the service
  • not being able to complete their booking when they’ve accessed the service

DVSA apologises for the inconvenience this has caused.

Service unavailable until 8am on Wednesday 26 August 2020

DVSA has taken the service offline until 8am on Wednesday 26 August 2020 to carry out essential maintenance.

This will help the service to cope with the increased demand from the public.

The services that will be unavailable until then are:

  • booking your driving test
  • changing your driving test appointment
  • checking your driving test appointment details
  • cancelling your driving test

DVSA is introducing a queuing system for people using the service.

You’ll see how many people are in front of you in the queue.

Only 35,675 appointments are available during the next 6 weeks. This is because:

social distancing measures are limiting the number of tests DVSA can carry out per day

some critical worker tests are still being carried out as a priority

You’ll only be able to see and book appointments available within the next 6 weeks.
