A father and son from Derby have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for plotting to kill a Birmingham man in a revenge-driven conspiracy. Mohammed Aslam, aged 56, and his son, Mohammed Nazir, aged 30, of Elms Avenue, Derby, were jailed at Birmingham Crown Court today for their roles in a plan to murder the owner of a Birmingham clothing store or a member of his family, following a violent altercation at the store in 2018.
The confrontation, which left both men injured, ignited a vendetta that culminated in an attempt on the store owner’s life on 7 September 2019. As the target arrived home in South Yardley, Birmingham, he was threatened with a firearm; however, the gun jammed, enabling him to escape unharmed. Following the failed attempt, further intimidation tactics were used, including threatening messages and an attempt to lure the victim to a second confrontation. When he did not respond, his home was shot at, with three rounds fired at the property.
A joint investigation by West Midlands Police and Derbyshire Police eventually connected Aslam and Nazir to the attacks. Through mobile phone analysis, CCTV footage, and financial records, detectives were able to establish their involvement in the conspiracy. The investigation also uncovered Nazir’s illegal efforts to import firearms, intending to use the weapons and shift blame to another individual.
At trial, Nazir was found guilty of conspiracy to murder, possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, perverting the course of justice, and the illegal importation of firearms. He received a 32-year sentence. Aslam, although cleared of firearm charges, was convicted of conspiracy to murder and sentenced to 10 years.
Today’s sentencing marks a significant development in the case, yet authorities state their investigation remains ongoing as they seek to bring all parties involved in the plot to justice.
