In a remarkable testament to dedication and community service, one of the newest members of the West Midlands Police, DC Zara Javaid, has demonstrated her commitment to community safety by leading a pivotal investigation into a violent assault that resulted in substantial prison sentences for two teenagers.

The distressing event unfolded on Aldridge Road, Great Barr, where a 16-year-old boy was severely injured in a machete attack last September. The swift and thorough investigation by the police led to the attackers surrendering themselves to the authorities.

Both 19-year-old perpetrators, Vacoy Farrell and Rion Solomon, confessed to their crimes after being confronted with overwhelming CCTV and witness evidence. Earlier this month, justice was served when Farrell received a four-year youth detention sentence, and Solomon was sentenced to two years.

DC Javaid, who took charge of the investigation, joined the police force in 2022 through the Police Now’s National Detective Programme, which equips graduates to become leading frontline investigators. Her motivation to join the force was fueled by a desire to support and protect the community during its most challenging times.

Reflecting on the incident, DC Javaid highlighted the severity of the violence and the life-altering consequences of such actions. She emphasized the importance of educating young people about the dangers of carrying weapons and the impact it can have on their lives and communities.

DC Javaid expressed her gratitude towards the Police Now programme for the foundational skills it provided her, which have been instrumental in her success within the Major Crime Unit. Her career goal is to continue serving the community by conducting professional and thorough investigations to ensure public safety.

The West Midlands Police continue to actively recruit new officers, offering a variety of entry paths and a promising career trajectory, emphasizing the rewarding nature of a policing career both for individual growth and community well-being.
