A Birmingham man has been jailed after stealing a wallet from a 79-year-old which contained a precious locket of his late wife’s hair.
Iftikhar Sarmad, from Underhill Road in Alum Rock, has been jailed for two and a half years.
He was sentenced on Monday (19 July) at Birmingham Crown Court for robbery and dangerous driving.
Police arrested Mr Sarmad in May, a day after he robbed the 79-year-old man at a bus stop in Hodge Hill.
The man’s wallet, which contained photos and a locket filled with his late wife’s hair, was stolen. Police found this in a nearby drain that criminals hide weapons and stolen property in.
You might remember that police shared a story with you of the moment when police handed the wallet back to the man. It was a really emotional time for everyone. Especially when he kissed the locket and said: “I could never replace this.”
