The mother of one of Cody Fisher’s killers has been convicted of assisting her son in a bid to escape the country following the nightclub stabbing in Birmingham.

Jahzeen Carpenter, 40, from Lower Gornal, was found guilty at Wolverhampton Crown Court of helping her son, Kami Carpenter, prepare to flee to Jamaica in the aftermath of the killing.

Cody Fisher, 23, was fatally stabbed inside the Crane nightclub in Digbeth on Boxing Day 2022. The following day, Carpenter drove to London in her white Mercedes convertible, where she joined her son, who was carrying two suitcases packed with clothes.

Police arrested them both outside flats in Lewisham, south-east London, on 28 December. A search of Carpenter’s car uncovered more than £5,000 in cash. Investigators also discovered she had researched a flight to Kingston, Jamaica, which her son had booked and was due to board on the day of his arrest.

Detective Inspector Phil Poole, from the Homicide team, said:
“Cody’s murder left his family devastated. While they were grieving, Carpenter’s mother was trying to help her son escape justice. Thanks to swift work alongside the Metropolitan Police, we prevented him from leaving the country and secured justice for Cody’s loved ones. Today’s conviction shows just how many lives knife crime can destroy.”

Last year, Kami Carpenter, now 24, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 25 years. His co-defendant, Remy Gordon, was also sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to serve at least 26 years.

Cody Fisher, a young football coach, had been targeted after a minor encounter with Gordon at a nightclub days earlier. On Boxing Day, he was surrounded inside the Crane, assaulted and stabbed once in the chest, dying at the scene.

Knife crime across the West Midlands is reported to be falling, but police continue to stress the dangers of carrying blades and remain committed to tackling serious violence.
