The mother of one of Cody Fisher’s killers has been handed a suspended prison sentence for helping her son attempt to flee the country after the 23-year-old was stabbed to death at the Crane nightclub in Digbeth, Birmingham, on Boxing Day 2022.

Jahzeen Carpenter, 40, from Peak Drive, Lower Gornal, drove to London a day after her son, Kami Carpenter, fatally stabbed Cody Fisher. She was arrested alongside him in Lewisham, south-east London, on 28 December 2022, as he prepared to board a flight to Jamaica.

Police later found more than £5,000 in cash in Carpenter’s white Mercedes convertible, and phone records showed she had researched flights from Gatwick to Kingston, Jamaica. Her son had booked a seat on a plane due to depart just hours after their arrest.

Following a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Carpenter was found guilty of assisting an offender. She was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years.

Detective Inspector Phil Poole from the Homicide Team said:
“Cody’s murder left his family and friends devastated. While they were grieving, Carpenter’s mother was trying to help her son avoid capture and flee to Jamaica. This would have delayed justice and caused further pain to Cody’s loved ones.”

He added that joint efforts with the Metropolitan Police led to the swift arrests, ensuring justice for Cody’s family.

Last year, Kami Carpenter, now 24, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 25 years, while his co-accused, Remy Gordon, was sentenced to life with a minimum of 26 years.

Cody Fisher was fatally stabbed after being attacked inside the Crane nightclub, following an earlier dispute at Popworld in Solihull.

Police continue to warn of the devastating impact of knife crime and urge young people to think twice before carrying a weapon.
