Significant changes to the training requirements for Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence holders and applicants have been announced, with new rules set to take effect from April 2025. The updated regulations aim to ensure that private security professionals are equipped with the necessary skills to maintain public safety, adapt to evolving industry practices, and comply with recent legal and technological advancements.
From April 1, 2025, individuals renewing their door supervisor or security guard licences will be required to complete a ‘refresher’ qualification.
Additionally, applicants must hold an up-to-date Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification or an equivalent before enrolling in the refresher training. Proof of first aid certification will need to be presented to training providers upon registration.
The SIA has already introduced several updates in recent years. In 2021, new qualifications were rolled out for all sectors except close protection and vehicle immobilisation. Door supervisors and security guards were also mandated to hold an EFAW qualification before undertaking licence-linked training. Similarly, in 2022, an updated close protection qualification was introduced, requiring operatives to complete the new training or top-up courses for licence renewals.
The changes are designed to ensure that security professionals can effectively respond to emergencies, adhere to modern working practices, and utilise new technologies. The SIA emphasised that these measures are crucial for maintaining high standards within the private security industry.
For those considering a switch between licence types, the SIA has provided flexible options. Door supervisor licence holders can either renew their existing licence by completing the door supervisor refresher training or switch to a security guard licence by taking the corresponding refresher course. Similarly, close protection operatives can renew their licence with top-up training or transition to a door supervisor licence by completing the relevant refresher course.
First aid training remains a cornerstone of the updated requirements. Door supervisors and security guards must hold an EFAW qualification or equivalent, while close protection operatives are required to complete a level 3 first aid qualification or higher. Accepted certifications include First Aid at Work (FAW), First Person on Scene (FPOS), and First Response Emergency Care (FREC), among others.
The SIA encourages licence holders and applicants to consult their training providers for further details on acceptable qualifications and course availability. These changes underscore the SIA’s commitment to enhancing professionalism and safety within the private security sector.
