West Midlands Police have put Section 60 powers in place today (7 November) across parts of Birmingham to keep people safe during the Aston Villa vs Maccabi Tel Aviv match at Villa Park.

More than 700 officers will be on duty as part of a major policing operation. Officers will be stopping and searching people under Section 60 powers, which allow police to act without reasonable grounds to prevent violence or disorder.

The powers will be active from 12pm today until 3am tomorrow (8 November).

Chief Superintendent Tom Joyce said: “We are working closely with Birmingham City Council, Aston Villa Football Club, and other emergency services to make sure the city remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone. Anyone who breaks the law or incites hate will face action.”

Police will be visible across the area, including mounted officers, police dogs, drone units, and traffic teams.

Ch Supt Joyce added: “We expect protests from different groups today, and we have plans to manage them safely. Our priority is to protect all communities, allow peaceful protest, and ensure everyone enjoys the football in safety.”

People are being advised to expect traffic delays near Villa Park this evening and to avoid the area if possible.
