A notorious pickpocket has been handed a 16-month prison sentence after a string of thefts targeted vulnerable women and elderly individuals in Birmingham city centre over the summer months.
Fadi Zemmour, 36, of no fixed address, was responsible for a dozen offences, including eight thefts, three attempted thefts, and one fraud by false representation. His victims included mothers distracted while caring for young children and individuals assisting elderly relatives, making them easy targets for his schemes.
Operation Taurus, Birmingham’s dedicated pickpocketing unit, identified a pattern of these thefts and traced Zemmour back to London. After traveling to Birmingham with the intent to commit crimes over a three-month period, he was apprehended in London on December 12 and subsequently extradited to the West Midlands to face charges.
Zemmour appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court on December 17, where he admitted to his crimes. At Birmingham Crown Court yesterday, Judge Emily Thompson condemned his actions, emphasizing the ongoing risk he posed to the public.
“Pickpocketing is not a petty crime as some believe, and it can have a lasting impact on the victims,” stated PC Amy O’Connor from Operation Taurus. “I’d encourage everyone to be on the lookout for the tricks and tactics that pickpockets use so they can help protect themselves and keep their property safe.”
To aid in preventing future incidents, Operation Taurus provided the following safety tips:
- Stay aware of your surroundings and be cautious of those close behind you.
- Keep valuables out of sight and secure bags properly.
- Use bags that cross the body to safeguard essential items.
- Never leave bags unattended, especially when managing pushchairs.
- Avoid storing wallets or phones in easily accessible pockets.
Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help maintain safety in Birmingham’s bustling city centre.
