The Washwood Heath area of Birmingham is set to undergo significant transformation as part of the HS2 project, with work on the Aston Church Road Overbridge and Saltley Viaduct (B4114) gathering pace. These crucial infrastructure upgrades will accommodate the high-speed rail line connecting Saltley, Washwood Heath, and Nechells.
Aston Church Road Overbridge to Be Rebuilt
Located two miles northeast of Birmingham city centre, the existing Aston Church Road Overbridge will be demolished to create the necessary space for HS2’s tracks. The construction of a new, wider bridge is scheduled to begin in autumn 2024, with the project expected to take 14 to 18 months to complete.
The works will require the full closure of Aston Church Road to motorised traffic in both directions. However, access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained throughout the project. Clear signage and diversion routes will be put in place to minimise disruption.
Saltley Viaduct Works Also Underway
In addition to the Aston Church Road Overbridge, the Saltley Viaduct will also be demolished and reconstructed to accommodate the new rail line. Together, these bridges will span the high-speed rail corridor, ensuring seamless connectivity between key Birmingham areas.
Supporting Communities During the Transition
HS2 has committed to providing clear communication and support to affected communities and stakeholders throughout the project. Local residents will receive detailed information about travel diversions and construction impacts well in advance of the works.
The new bridges are a vital component of the HS2 project, which aims to enhance connectivity, reduce travel times, and drive economic growth in the region. With construction at full speed, the Washwood Heath area is set to play a pivotal role in Birmingham’s future transport network.
