Police have lifted a closure notice on a Birmingham restaurant, after a planned meeting of car enthusiasts was canceled.

Officers took the step of closing German Doner Kebab on The Parade in Sutton Coldfield because of concerns that a large number of cars would be descending on the venue for the meet, which it had helped organize, last night.

The event was subsequently called off, and only a few people turned up.

The closure notice, due to run until tomorrow, has now been lifted early, allowing the store to open as normal.

Supt Gareth Mason said today: “Ordering this business to close was not a step we took lightly, but we felt we had no other option when faced with the prospect of a major gathering of car enthusiasts which could have caused significant disruption and anti-social behaviour in the area.

“We’re pleased that the organisers decided to call off the event, which was due to take place in a confined area which would have been busy with Christmas shoppers.

“We worked closely with Birmingham City Council to get this result, and we won’t hesitate to act to protect the public when we believe there’s a risk to them.”
