A teenager who threatened a woman with a gun as he stole her car has been locked up for four years after officers tracked him down just a day later.

Yousaf Ejaz, aged 18, arranged to meet the woman in Birmingham to test drive the car she was selling online, on the evening of 27 December last year.

But after driving it poorly for a short distance she asked him to stop and he then pulled out what looked like a black handgun, threatened her, and demanded she gets out of the car before Ejaz drove away.

She reported it to us immediately and the next evening the vehicle triggered an ANPR camera in the city and officers were dispatched.

Firearms officers soon tracked Ejaz down to Holyhead Road and boxed in the car, but he jumped out and ran off.

Two officers gave chase and Ejaz was arrested following a short chase – he was still wearing the same clothes he’d been in when he stole the car the day before.

Checks also showed that the mobile phone found in the car had been used to arrange the viewing of the vehicle.

Ejaz, of Boulton Road, Handsworth, admitted robbery, possession of an imitation firearm, driving without a license or insurance and was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday (11 March) to four years detention in a young offenders’ institution.

Detective Constable Jeff Brooks, from Force CID said: “This was an understandably shocking and frightening experience for the woman and we hope that knowing Ejaz is now behind bars brings her some comfort.”
