UberX Share Makes a Comeback, Offering Riders Savings and Drivers More Opportunities
Uber has officially launched its popular ride-sharing service, UberX Share, in the UK—marking its first expansion outside the US since its recent relaunch. Following its successful rollout in major US cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, UberX Share aims to make transportation more affordable and sustainable by allowing riders to share journeys with others heading in a similar direction.
Riders benefit from upfront discounts and the possibility of up to 20% off if matched with a co-rider.
After halting shared rides in 2020, Uber spent months gathering feedback and refining the product to address both driver and rider concerns. The revamped UberX Share promises upfront discounts for riders who opt to share their journey, with the potential to save up to 20% on their total fare if matched with a co-rider.
“Our teams have worked tirelessly to redesign UberX Share, making sure riders stay on schedule—no more than eight minutes longer than a typical UberX trip—and helping the environment by reducing emissions per passenger,” Uber announced. “It’s a win for riders, drivers, and the planet.”
Key Features for Drivers
Drivers with at least 700 completed trips, and whose insurance allows “multi-fare passenger shared rides,” can now accept UberX Share requests. Notably:
* They can accept or decline additional co-riders, with a maximum of three at any time.
* A new, shorter cancellation window means drivers can collect a fee if a rider doesn’t show within two minutes.
* Riders cannot change drop-off points mid-trip, simplifying the journey.
* Drivers continue to earn Uber Pro points for each additional co-rider and are guaranteed at least the same earnings as an equivalent UberX trip.
“UberX Share is more than just a product—it’s a commitment to accessibility, affordability, and sustainability,” Uber stated. “We’re excited to help riders save money while giving drivers new earning opportunities.”
Uber plans to expand UberX Share to even more cities this summer, reinforcing its push towards reducing personal car usage and building a more connected urban ecosystem.
