The UK government has announced an extension of driving licence and vehicle exemptions for Ukrainian nationals who fled Russia’s invasion, allowing them to continue driving on British roads without additional financial burdens.

Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood confirmed an 18-month extension for Ukrainian licence holders, enabling them to drive mopeds, motorcycles, and cars for up to 4.5 years from their arrival in the UK.

Additionally, certain Ukrainians on visa schemes will remain exempt from vehicle registration and Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) for another 18 months, easing financial pressures.

The extension aligns with the launch of the Ukraine Permission Extension scheme, which allows eligible Ukrainians to stay in the UK for an additional 18 months beyond their current permission. The UK government’s continued support reflects its 100 Year Partnership commitment with Ukraine, aimed at fostering long-term ties and facilitating reconstruction efforts once the war ends.

Since the invasion began in February 2022, the UK has provided £12.8 billion in humanitarian, economic, and military aid, with a commitment of £3 billion annually for Ukraine’s defence.

This latest move underscores the UK’s unwavering support for Ukrainians, ensuring they can continue to live and travel in Britain without undue hardship.
