West Midlands Police have achieved a significant milestone in their fight against serious and organised crime, recovering more than 200 firearms this year.
The force has seized 210 lethal weapons since January, marking a 40% increase compared to the 150 recovered in 2023.
The Major Crime Unit’s Proactive (MCUP) team led many of these operations, uncovering firearms like a Madsen machine gun hidden behind a bath panel in a Stechford home. This haul, which also included a revolver and tools for converting blank-firing guns into live weapons, led to a suspect facing a lengthy prison sentence next month.
The MCUP has launched dozens of manhunts to apprehend suspects involved in murders, shootings, and kidnappings, resulting in 45 arrests. Their efforts have also extended to targeting online child sex offenders, with 61 arrests made, including individuals attempting to meet children.
Reactive officers, who respond to serious incidents like shootings, have also charged over 40 individuals with major crimes, including more than 20 accused of murder or conspiracy to murder.
The Regional Organised Crime Unit for the West Midlands (ROCUWM) has supported these efforts, working across the Midlands to disrupt criminal activities. Notable achievements include thwarting an underworld gun deal and arresting a Walsall teenager in a joint operation with the FBI.
Det Supt Ryan Chambers, head of the Major Crime Unit, praised the force’s relentless dedication, stating:
“Taking 200 guns off the streets is a major victory for public safety in the West Midlands. Our teams remain committed to targeting those involved in guns, drugs, and exploitation to make our communities safer.”
West Midlands Police vow to continue their unwavering fight against crime, ensuring the region’s streets are safer for all.
