A firefighter who provided fake identities to try and avoid speeding tickets has been jailed after Police exposed his lies. Jason Bennett was caught breaking the law three times in under six months but gave bogus names and addresses in an attempt to dodge penalty points and fines.
His Mercedes was clocked travelling at 37mph in a 30mph zone in Darlaston Road, Walsall in June 2018; and then 49mph in a 40mph zone on Fort Parkway, Birmingham, in the October.
It was then recorded at 54mph in a 40mph area on Heartlands Parkway, Birmingham, later that same month.
He returned Notice of Intended Prosecutions (NIP) forms – which are sent to the registered keeper – with false details for the ‘phantom’ driver each time. Police officers were not to be deceived and were able to prove Bennett – who already had six penalty points – was spinning a web of lies with CCTV evidence to back them up.
The 44-year-old of Forge Street, Wednesbury, admitted offences of perverting the course of justice at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday (1 July) and was jailed for a year. He faces a further 12 months driving ban.

Members of all emergency services see the tragic consequences of collisions caused by speed. “It doesn’t matter who is involved – we will never tolerate deceit to avoid punishment. He has now faced the ultimate sanction of losing his liberty.”
