Police arrested a man in the early hours of this morning (20 Jan) on suspicion of involvement in a burglary by bogus police officers who handcuffed a couple in their own home.
Police have released body-worn video showing the man’s arrest by the A14 in Northamptonshire after a car had sped away from our motorway police on the southbound M6 at around 2.15am.
The man scrambled through bushes and over a fence but was quickly chased down and arrested in a field.
It’s suspected he was part of a three-strong group who posed as PCs to gain access to a house in Hawthorn Close, Bordesley, about an hour earlier.
A man and woman were handcuffed by the offenders – who claimed to be carrying out intelligence checks – before searching the house and taking jewellery, watches and cash.
They made off in a black Ford Focus but we recovered a partial number plate and checks on roads cameras showed a similar vehicle had travelled from London to the West Midlands before the offence.
Shortly after our motorway police intercepted a car – found to have been stolen in Ilford, Essex on 12 January – on the M6 and recovered jewellery and police uniform.
A 55-year-old man from Dagenham was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, car theft, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and robbery.
He remains in police custody while our enquiries continue.
