Police have needed to cordon off part of Birmingham city centre as officers investigate a serious assault late last night.

Officers received reports of men causing trouble in a convenience shop in Upper Dean Street shortly after 10.30pm – and moments later it’s believed there was a fight in the street where one man was punched.

The man – who we’ve not yet been able to identify – suffered a serious head injury and is in hospital in a critical condition.

CCTV shows the offenders, understood to okbe at least two, running off through the outdoor markets and up the steps past St Martins Church.

Police are continuing to examine security cameras in a bid to find the offenders.

Upper Dean Street remains sealed off this morning, in addition to the outdoor market and the steps by St Martin’s Church.

Officers hope to reduce the size of the cordon later this morning.
