A man fatally stabbed in Coventry has been named as Haji Choudhary Rab Nawaz – as police have made more arrests and continue to appeal for information.

Officers detained four more people in connection with the death of the 52-year-old on Sunday evening (2 October) during the early hours of this morning.

It comes as police still seek more people to come forward with information around the killing, having created a dedicated web page to help people contact us and upload information.

Police were called to the Jamiah Masjid & Institute – at the junction of Durbar Avenue and Queen Mary’s Road – at just after 9pm following reports of a fight involving a large group of men, some armed with knives, outside.

Mr Nawaz was found injured and despite the best efforts to save him, he died a short time later.

In a statement his family said: “We thank the emergency services for their tireless effort for trying to save our father.

“We are hopeful in the police investigation and we, the family, want all those responsible to be brought to justice.

“They have extinguished a dependable shining light of good, an innocent humble loving family man, our father, our brother, our friend, Haji Choudhary Rab Nawaz.”

Two men, aged 27 and 56, were arrested on suspicion of murder earlier in the week and remain in custody after we were granted further time to question them.

Three more men – aged 20, 23 and 29 – will now also be questioned on suspicion of murder and a 54-year-old man for assisting offenders.

We’re still keen to hear from anyone with information which can help our investigation and ensure we get justice for Mr Nawaz.
