A 14-year-old boy remains in custody following his arrest on Tuesday night in connection with the tragic murder of 12-year-old Leo Ross. Detectives have been granted additional time to question the teenage suspect as the investigation continues.

Leo Ross was found murdered on January 21 at approximately 3:15 PM in the Hall Green area. The investigation has expanded to include three separate assaults that occurred on January 19, 20, and 21, targeting victims aged in their 70s and 80s.

The suspect was initially apprehended on suspicion of the January 19 assault. While in custody, authorities subsequently charged him with the murder of Leo Ross and the two additional assaults. Chief Superintendent Richard North of the Birmingham LPA emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation, stating, “I would ask the public and the media not to speculate on the motive of this incident, the investigation is in the early stages and we have someone in custody.”

Chief Superintendent North also appealed to the community for assistance, urging anyone with relevant CCTV, mobile phone, or dashcam footage from the area during the specified dates to come forward. “We are asking for any information which could help in our enquiries,” he added. “Anyone who has any dashcam, doorbell or CCTV footage from the days leading up to January 21 is urged to get in touch or submit it directly to us via our Major Incident Public Portal.”

The police are collaborating with parents, schools, carers, and other partners to address the issue of knife crime and its severe consequences. “This work must and will continue,” Superintendent North affirmed. “Today, our focus is on the family of the young boy who has lost his life in such a tragic way, and ensuring we get justice for him and his family.”

Authorities are committed to providing updates as the investigation progresses and have reassured the public that they are dedicated to bringing justice to Leo Ross and his family.
