One of WMP school liaison officers has teamed up with a Martial Arts group to deliver Tae Kwon-Do taster sessions in a Kings Norton school.

Sensei Mark Clews (right), who runs the Redditch Tigers with his wife Helen, and Chris Martin demonstrated their skills at the Ark Kings Academy in Shannon Road yesterday (7 Oct) as part of the region’s ‘Week 13 Concept’.*

PC Matt Shakespeare works closely with the academy and hopes to establish regular Tae Kwon-Do lessons as part of after school activity for seven to 11-year-olds. He said: “Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, the pupils couldn’t take part in the taster sessions, but they thoroughly enjoyed the demonstrations and we hope to get them involved as soon as possible.

“Martial Arts is a discipline which we hope will help with anger management, self-control, respect and fitness, while also raising aspirations and confidence in the children.”

*Week 13 Concept is a three day intensive focus on reducing crime and violence in high impact areas by working with communities and partner agencies on a range of initiatives to promote employability, youth activities, family support and much more. The project is hoping to set up sustainable activities with the support of the community.
