A dangerous driver has been jailed after speeding down a 30mph road at up to 70mph in appalling weather conditions causing a collision that killed a man.
Akash Hussain, aged 23, sped away from the scene after hitting Robert Davis on Bescot Crescent, Walsall, who was crossing the road near the train station car park.
The uninsured driver left the 57-year-old fighting for his life after he suffered a serious head injury. Mr. Davis died a short while later at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He is survived by his wife and two sisters. They described Mr. Davis as “the most loving, caring husband, step-father, brother and friend anyone could wish for”.
Police issued an appeal to help trace the offender following the fatal hit and run on 14 January 2020. It prompted Hussain to hand himself in to a police station on 17 January 2020, three days after the collision.
CCTV shows Hussain traveling at speeds of approximately 70mph prior to hitting Mr. Davis. At the time it was dark and had been raining heavily throughout the afternoon, with large pools of water present on the carriageway.
Hussain, of Holden Crescent, Walsall, pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Friday (5 February) at Wolverhampton Crown Court for causing death by dangerous driving.
He was jailed for four years and eight months and disqualified from driving for nine years and four months on his release. He will be required to sit an extended re-test before he’s allowed behind the wheel again.
DC Jamie Simon, from the Force CID Homicide Team, said: “Driving at these speeds under the road conditions on the night was totally unacceptable and caused the death of a man. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Mr Davis.
“This irresponsible driver has now been jailed for his reckless actions, and this case should serve as a warning to others of the potentially fatal consequences of dangerous driving.”
